The DEMO testbed was created to support the NMIS Digital Factory by enabling digital connectivity and ISA-95 inspired data integration for machines and equipment. The project scope covered IIoT infrastructure for the Advanced Forming Research Centre (AFRC), where 73 machines are located, ranging from low-tech units to state-of-the-art systems. The aim was to create a connected, data-driven environment to improve machine visibility and performance insight.

The Solution
The project involved the supply, installation, and commissioning of IIoT sensors and gateways on all machines and equipment across the OEM and customer sandbox testbed. Data collected from these devices was aggregated into an analytics and dashboard platform via a newly established industrial ethernet network. This enabled deeper analysis and actionable insights into machine operations.
The acquired data covered energy monitoring, machine performance, and building monitoring, with access provided both locally through displays and remotely via the cloud. By creating a seamless data pipeline, the system ensured that critical machine and facility information could be visualised and analysed in real-time.
The Outcome
The result was the provision of an IIoT system that enabled seamless, synchronised, and centralised real-time data acquisition from existing machinery and equipment. This facilitated data processing, dashboarding, analysis, and secure storage. By linking machines to a complete ecosystem to local HMIs, dashboards, and cloud services, the solution delivered detailed insights into machine performance. This not only enhanced monitoring and efficiency but also created opportunities for advanced machine learning applications to drive further innovation.
