Functional Safety

Booth Welsh has a team of Process, Systems and Instrument Engineers with expertise and formal IEC61511 qualifications (TUV and/or CFSE/CFSP).Having engineers from both disciplines with this specialism allows us to deliver across any Functional Safety Lifecycle phases for projects. Our Process Engineers participate in Analysis Phase activities.Our Instrument and Systems Engineers participate or lead Realisation Phase designs, testing and commissioning and can support clients with design mods in the Operational Phase.

Process Safety

We have experienced Hazard Study team leaders using the more formal Six-Step process but who also apply Hazop/HazID principles and methodologies across process sectors less accustomed to such a structure but who require, and can benefit from, a systematic safety review of designs and proposals.

In terms of formal studies, we can offer:

  • Hazard Studies – typically 1 through 3 (including Hazop and HazID)
  • Process Hazard Risk Assessment (top-down focused on major hazards)
  • Can be carried out both between remote teams (e.g. UK & Overseas) and recently via group conferencing

Process Modelling

Modelling of some kind is key to understanding and predicting performance of most processes and unit operations.

Combined with validation against actual performance, it provides confidence that:

  • The operations are properly understood at a fundamental level
  • Process and equipment are performing as expected (Benchmarking)
  • Where the performance gaps and shortfalls are
  • Predictions of projected changes are relatively robust
  • Improvements can be quantified, and changes financially evaluated

Models are one of the essential tools used for Process Engineering studies and investigations as well as design but also provide the basis for optimising equipment and processes, targeting the most critical performance parameters.

They can take the form of relatively simple or complex spreadsheets for large systems but where more rigor is required for detailed equipment design and assessment, the ABB PEL® Suite or HYSYS® can be deployed.

Sustainability & Environmental

Demonstrating sustainability and reducing environmental impact are of increasing focus and importance but from a Process Engineering perspective are another set of criteria that can be understood, targeted and optimised using the Process Engineering tools and approach to problems.

Many recent studies and projects have been focused on sustainability e.g. reducing energy consumption used for process solvent recovery at two clients’ sites and, as yet to be implemented, steam usage at a large grain whisky distillery.
