The Background.

Each Nuclear Power Station has to ensure that appropriate examination, inspection, maintenance and testingarrangements are in place and defined within the safety significance of the equipment to achieve compliance with each station's site or Nuclear license.

The Equipment Reliability process identifies and evaluates important plant equipment to develop and maintain long-term preventive maintenance strategies, condition monitoring-based solutions and reliability-centered maintenance.

EDF supplies 1/5th of the UK's energy

The Client: EDF Energy

For more than 20 years, Booth Welsh has had a strong working relationship with EDF Energy which has seen our services being utilised across all eight nuclear power stations in the UK along with their headquarters in Barnwood.

Booth Welsh has provided valued support across a varied range of business areas within EDF Energy which includeEquipment Reliability, Engineering Support for Electrical, Instrumentation and Mechanical disciplines, Outage Support System Health Support, Work Instruction Authoring and Project Support. Booth Welsh has demonstrated flexibility and commitment throughout all of these projects.

The Solution.

Booth Welsh was asked to provide an engineering solution which consisted of all equipment andwork routines being collated into a database to allow detailed reviews to be carried out. These reviews determined the right level of operational requirements required to comply with siteand Nuclear license commitments. Critical values for each equipment item and all routine preventative maintenance tasks for Examination, Inspection, Maintenance and Testing activities will be reviewed to determine the right level of maintenance is getting carried out against industries best practices and Electrical Power Research Institute (EPRI) guidelines.

The Project Scope of Work included:• Design & Build access database• Carry out data analysis• Prepare specific spreadsheets to accommodate clientrequirements• Assess each equipment item to determine criticality• Carry out a full detailed maintenance review• Complete engineering basis (justification formaintenance)• Implement all changes to their Asset ManagementSystem• Carry out a QA checkBooth Welsh engineers carried out Equipment Reliability preventative maintenance reviews. This included creating a Access database, compiling a detailed spreadsheet which included all equipment items and their respective maintenance routines, grouping equipment together, anomaly checks, Preventative Maintenance reviews, liaise and agreeing Preventative Maintenance Review with client, carrying out full implementation of the review which included engineering new work order cards, enhancing routines, reducing or extending frequency on current routines, creating new maintenance instructions and creating new equipment or routines.

The Benefits.
