Design of more than 500m New Pipework

Disciplines (Project Management, Process, Piping, Civils, Structural)

Design of more than 30 Tonnes of New Structural Steelwork

The Background

The cooling tower water distribution pipework was in poor condition, and previous leaks had resulted in unplanned shutdowns and loss of production. Much of the existing pipework was underground making it difficult to maintain.

The Solution

Booth Welsh carried out Process, Mechanical & Piping, Civils & Structural design for replacement of Cooling Water Pipework.

An initial FEED study was carried out to evaluate all options, including selection of materials of construction, pipework sizing and routing to bring it  above ground, locations of new pipe bridges, tie-in requirements, plant shutdowns and associated costs.

Tie-ins were designed to be installed in a short duration shutdown, allowing the remainder of the pipework to be constructed without impacting on operations.

The design allowed changeover from old pipework to new pipework without the requirement for a further shutdown.

Benefits for Client

  •  Investment in initial FEED study allowed for best fit solution to be identified for the client
  •  Job carried out with minimum impact on operations
  •  Reduced risk of loss of services/production from the loss of cooling water
  •  Improved maintainability of the cooling tower distribution pipework by bringing it above ground
  •  Integration of multi-discipline services leading to significant budget and time savings for the client
